I got a froze mage to level 50 in the past 3 week. Froze does less damage than fire. But the abilities do give the mage more tankability. I have tried parts of the Warfiend instances with just the mage and a healer. By the way, you are allow to respec one time per level with in game gold. After the last respec at 50, you can buy respec tokens with tributes. So you are in not way stuck with a build.

So you are in not way stuck with a build.

You can also purchase a second role for your abilities that you can switch between. In your example, you could have a Frost Magus setup on one role and a Fire one on the other.
