at least untill you figure out what type of abilities you are going to choose IE fire, storm, ice. I would suggest going for the state increases. Intel focus endurence. Get the quick ones out of the way.

Then depends on what trades you choose you may wish to study in them.

Or can specialize the studies for magics. The rest really is dependant on how you build your toon.

Focus Regeneration studies are a good path to go down for any caster, then as Issy said, stat increasing studies and studies to strengthen whichever element you decide to focus on.

you can have a total of 3, unfortunately every character is forced to have Novice Crafting ... which is, well ... just like many other parts of the game
quite random.

I feel that slant is more random than the design. :) Each character starts with Novice Crafting and is allowed to learn 2 more professions. Having a base profession that all characters share (which helps with other crafts, quest items, etc) isn't random in the slightest.
I'm currently drinking a Pepsi. Doesn't matter when you read this, it's most likely true.

But you don't really need it ...

Aside of the Fruit Sauce or Juice, whichever of those is needed for a quest
and the Animal Cage, there's absolutely nothing in Novice Crafting that's
actually worth crafting ... or couldn't be added on any of the other professions.

All those Transmutation Recipies => Mining/Skinning/Herbalism
Cooking ... what for ? You can buy food from the vendor.
the lowbie Potions => Alchemy
the lowbie Cloth stuff => Tailoring.

What else is there left once you take out those from Novice Crafting ?

Fruit Sauce/Paste and those 3 Epic Trinkets and the Cloak which require a bazillion of other items to be crafted.

The trinkets tho could be crafted from any other profession, seeing that
Alchemy and Leatherworking can also produce Trinkets and the Cloak could
also be made by any other profession since they all have Cloaks too.

I have found the novice crafting to be quite usefull at lower levels. Especially if you don't take the added trades right away. Stuff is cheap easy to make and the food is much cheaper then buying it, especially if it is your first toon and you are getting a feel for the game.

The focus studies are also quite usefull decreasing the downtime between fights and the regen during a fight. Noticed a big jump in after battle regen when I got around to actually taking the study.
