Questions:
1. Did you visit your trainer and get more spells?
2. Are you advancing your studies?
3. Are you spending your ability points?
Another thing, if you are primarily a solo player I suggest creating a Ranger and trying that class out. In my opinion, it is the best class for soloing. When I started a Magus I had the same problems as you, but as a Ranger I could kill both of those creatures solo while I was the same level as them. I might have even killed Maggothead at level 3, I can't remember.
Good luck and welcome to the game!

yeah, I am playing solo because my server is low and hardly anyone on there with me. I may change to Ranger if I can't kill these two.But my point is, if you are at the same level as the adversary then you should be able to kill them. These enemies waste me as soon as I get started. This needs attention from the programmers of this game or else I will not be able to play this game.I will have no choice.
Don't give up hope! I was a little level 3 healer and managed to do it as well (after a few tries) with a healing potion, focus potion, and a little kiting (first 4 or 5 spells before melee-range). If worse comes to worst you can always kill a few mobs, level up to 4 (or even 5) and come back. Those beginner quests are not requisite for leaving the n00bie area.

Yes they made him harder
No we didn't, he hasn't changed since February. Some people can solo him, and some people can't. If you're in the latter group ask in the help channel for a hand, this community is great about helping one another out. As others have said you can also gain another level or two and try again. And if you still can't beat him just move on. There's no reason to get hung up on one guy when there's a whole world out there to explore!

I'd like to point out that boss mobs are suppose to harder to kill, whats the point of having them if they are easy too kill. Healer and Ranger seem to be the only ones that can solo them with relative ease.. I'm a healer and it took some effort to kill Maggot but the other two I kited which made them easier.

BTW I am a Magi who only has 3 spells, fire, frost and ember bolt
Roll a Healer or Ranger, otherwise expect to die ALLOT as a Magus. I hate to say it but currently Magus is abit of a dry class even though its my favorite class to play in MMO's aside from pets.
Healer in Spirit mastery does comparable damage as the Magus, except with buffs and its heals you will rarely die, yet kill almost at the same rate as the magus.
Ranger, geez what can i say this class is just pure fun, even more so once you get your leg shot and kill mobs before they even get to you and then to top it off you have medium armor, GREAT dodge % and healing abilities!

This is true until you get to around level 28-30 where it seems that almost everything with two legs is a caster of some kind. (Ok, not all but a lot more then when you're lower levels.)
Also, if you think Maggothead is hard wait till you see Darkmane. (I think that's his name...) He's level 32 and either 6000 or 8000 health and too tough for me to handle. That guy will definately need a group; most of the MOBs I fight right now have around 1000 HP...

Agreed, however with a Ranger or Healer plus their Self HoT's and standard static heals + ranged DPS you still kill just about as fast as a Magus and faster than a Soldier, except you have virtually no down time between fights and dont really die, not to mention that fact that you can normally handle +2 adds without worry (if you know how to kite w/Ranger).
The fact of the matter is Ranger/Healers are far more fun dynamic classes compared to the Magus, Soldier at least has a few utilities and makes combat feel somewhat fun, Magus on the other hand feels dry and seems to lack utility during combat to make it more dynamic, but then again i guess not falling asleep during the Flamebolts 3.5sec cast is a challenge all to itself not to mention having an alarm clock to wake you up during Fireball cast!
