We want quality players who have a vested interest in the game. Granted in some regards we do have an open beta through Fileplanet and the QOL/MyAlganon site, it still allows us to gain a different perspective on player opinions than pulling people off the 'gaming street'.
Here's an analogy. If you were to poll random people off the street and ask them about food choices, they would provide one set of opinions about food.
They would tell you that one item may be overpriced, or that another has too much fat, or that they make decisions based on nutritional value. They would, generally, give you their honest opinions, and tell you what they think they want in a meal. However, if you were to follow them to lunch, and see what items they actually choose to eat, you'll often find they make very different choices. It's not unusual for person in a poll to say their favorite food is pizza, but every day, when lunch rolls around, pass by several pizza restaurants to sit down and enjoy something completely different. They didn't lie on the poll. People just make different decisions under different conditions. The choices you make to determine a favorite food are different than the choices you make when actually choosing what to eat. The same is true with choosing a television show to watch, which music to buy, who we choose to date, and how we react to MMOGs.
At QOL, we believe strongly in listening to our players, but asking "what is your favorite Alganon feature?" in an open beta doesn't help us nearly as much as observing paying players and seeing what they enjoy once they have a vested interest. Players will make very different decisions in a free game than they do in a game they are paying for. We want Alganon to be fun for our everyday subscribers. This is why we are not having an open-beta, and also why we are anxious to release as soon as possible.
Okay .. whatever .. guess I'm still having fun even though ???

Tim

I think it might get some heavy use, don't know why, just a hunch

I do hope the ignore function does work though and I also hope that we get fun, constructive and pleasant people joining the game.

I think a chat channel (if we can create our own by then) or maybe the open vent that was talked about last wk would be the way to go till a few wks after live when all this dies down.

Hmm, not a bad idea. A person could broadcast the channel periodically for those interested. You may get a periodic channel griefer, but I doubt it will be many, since most of them will want to speak into the most populated and viewed channel.
With this, maybe we could invite more of the open beta tester to experience what we've had before the (albeit temporary) chaos of the open beta ensued.

However if the chat channels were working properly with something like a help channel it would make the idea less useful.

Also yes- Can we create a Chat channel for spamless beta testing-type chat?
Or - Open up 'General chat' and let us serious testers use the Dev channel?
There has to be some way to save us from the potential flood....
