Just wondering if there is going to be any facility to help players to find/install/update a UI modification?

I have some friends who have been playing WoW for years now and have been using the default UI (even though they want more) all becuase they don't how to install a mod.  WoW does have one of the easiest UI's to place a custom item into but the keeping them upto date and what if they break scenarios generally leaves them thinking "it's easier just to live with defaults".

I think of this now becuase just last week I set them up with the CurseClient, which allows you to search for addons, install addons and keep them upto date.  It is a very handy tool and makes addons available to everyone (as long as they know about the curse client and how to install a program, oh and setup an account :) ).  So even still there is a hurdle there, and some people are often reserved about signing up to all these sites.

I was thinking with MyAlganon it would be good to have a section where people can place UI mods they make etc.  Along with that would be a way at the login screen of being able to search these addons and the game would install them from the site for you.  This would include the benefit of keeping the addon upto date from inside Alganon itself.

Just a thought.

-Why, Syndic, that's a wonderful suggestion.

Guess what?

It's already there!

Check the Groups section of MyAlganon for the "Programmers".

They'll hook ya up! Although a MyAlganon database or other searchable format would be cool to integrate as well.

You'll probably also be able to get some custom UIs at Curse Gaming and what not, but how cool is it to have the Quest support for custom UIs. Go Quest, KUDOs to you!

and I'm sure will get it's own section once the game is live and has working addons.

Yep I've been a member for sometime in that group. I've never had a problem with mods for UI's myself, even written a couple now and then.

With the widening of the audience for MMO's alot of people don't know mods exist, how to use them or even what they can do.

My vision would go something along the lines of this -
For those that play WoW know about the addon button, that allows you to enable/disable addons for your characters. imagine that screen is now replaced with a screen that allows you to find addons, have them downloaded & installed ready to go, tells you there are updates for the ones you have. The creator will have a notes section, and be able to describe the addon and any updates.

This would all coincide with a section on the MyAlganon site that would give the user the ability to upload their creations for others to use and to manage updates/versions etc all under their own login.

I couldn't imagine anything simpler than the game "controlling" it's own mods in a nice clear fashion.

If done the way you describe above I would be interested in giving it a try, as it would be nice for a 'one stop shop' for addons (and support of them).

But having used wow addon "suites" and "update managers", I've decided I'll just keep full control and update manually. easier to troubleshoot problems, and easier to know what addon does what when you install it yourself after looking at what's available to suit your needs.
my biggest problem with wow addons is that they tend to be large and unruly with features I dont want/need.

One thing I really hope is that the Alganon devs give a heads up patch notes to the Addon developers when they're changing UI stuff.

I find that myself. I generally only use about 20-50% of the features of mods I use, becuase the creators are generally asked to bloat them with options. Sometimes if it has too much I'll mod it myself and cut it down to just the features I want. Guess it comes down to how helpful the features I like are.

I'd like to be able to do that, but not enough to actually learn to do it.
I just dont have the inclination any more to learn the programming I'd need to make/modify addons.
So I rely on others to do it and I just hope I'll find what I need without a bunch of stuff I dont.

We will, sometime after launch, be releasing a mod repository that ties into MyAlganon and your normal user accounts. This has always been in the plans, same with video hosting and a few other gems. :)
